Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who come off popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a major health publication shows that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing these medications must be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to starting mass within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally have a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Experts believe the way of the drugs accounts for the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have come off the medication describe a intense resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you're instantly starving," said an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Growing Use

Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success hinges on ongoing behavioural management.
