Toy Story 5 Trailer Pits The Beloved Duo Against a Digital Device
Exactly 30 years after the original Toy Story film debuted, launching Pixar as a leading animation studio and bringing viewers to iconic figures like the cowboy doll (the actor) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), who are now famous worldwide.
In 2026, the next chapter is set to arrive. The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, providing a brief look into the storyline but leaving viewers wondering how it will address the ending of Toy Story 4.
Bonnie's New Toy: A Digital Device Spooks the Toys
The preview shows the young girl — who received Andy's toys when he grew up — getting a brand new toy, one that terrifies the familiar toy group. Bonnie gets her initial digital gadget, and she is excited about it.
Presumably, the amphibian-inspired device will come to life just like the rest of her playthings. However, the characters appear to consider it as a threat coming to replace them, which it probably is.
The Cowboy's Comeback: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4
An element the trailer doesn't touch on is what Woody is back with his companions in Bonnie's room. The end of Toy Story 4 saw him set off on a fresh journey with Bo Peep (the actress), traveling with a fair and helping prize toys locate loving owners.
Surely, the filmmakers will explain the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the film. Seeing him appear in the familiar setting unexpectedly is somewhat puzzling, however. It also makes us wonder whether Bo Peep will have returned with him. And what about Duke Caboom (Keanu Reeves)?
Continuity from the Previous Film
At the very least, some aspects are carrying over from the prior film. The final act the cowboy did before departing for his new life was pass his sheriff badge to Jessie (the voice actor), entrusting her as the leader of Bonnie's bedroom. The clip displays the insignia pinned to her shirt.
It is hoped she is remains the driving force among the group.
Toy Story 5 debuts on June 19, 2026.
