The New Mayor Promises a 'Dawn' for The Big Apple in First Address
On his initial day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” America's largest city, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious start to his administration.
A Groundbreaking Figure
The young figure, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.
“A moment like this is rare and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose hold the levers of change,” Mamdani stated.
Ignoring advice to lower expectations, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead expansively and audaciously.”
Steering by Democratic Socialist Ideals

The swearing-in was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over powerful interests.
An Ambitious Platform
Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform including:
- Subsidized daycare
- Fare-free public buses
- A cap on rents for about 1 million households
- A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores
The estimated $10 billion price tag of these services may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Managing External Challenges
The new mayor will deal with concern from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over controversial past tweets.
Mamdani has sought to address these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly cordial.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his address with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
